サンフランシスコ

From: Jim Looker

With the lure of a great apartment (which I had to wiggle my ass and suck a few dicks for) (oops, sorry Nina!) and a new job for Brian, the two lovebirds finally moved down to SF. A mere block from my place on Castro. Brian and I commuted together for a while, but the Wilma-quotient in the car was just too high. Besides, he had that hot little Jetta to drive down 280!

If you have no idea who I am, please press 'delete' now. Sorry for the wide distribution, but I've worked for so many groups throughout Adobe I didn't want to miss anyone.

I started at Aldus Corp of Seattle on Sept 23, 1991 for $8.50/hr as a front-line technical support representitive. Today I am leaving Adobe for Apple Computer, where I will be a software engineer in the Enterprise division ( http://www.apple.com/enterprise/ ), formerly NeXT. I'll be working with some new, very smart, fun people there. That's a long ways to come in seven years. Thank you to everyone who made Adobe a place to grow as well as work. It's been fun. If you'd like to contact me, my info is as follows:

Ack, another one bites the dust. Well, I figured it was just a matter of time since you moved down there. Sorry to see you go, but it's nice for a change to hear about someone going from Adobe to Apple instead of leaving for Microsoft!

Good luck to you and please keep in touch.

Goodby Kelly. I always thought you were destined for great things, and it looks like I was right. It sounded like you were off to live in the heart of San Franciso. Well, I'll be down visiting my brother there next year, so I'll make sure to contact you when I do.
Have a great life, and thanks for keeping in touch.

Kelly,

You're gonna' love it at Apple. I just came from Apple before working for Adobe, it's a great group of people and a great environment to be in. All the best, and give Steve [Jobs] my best.

Cheers,
Dean Juan

On 9/8/98 3:58 PM , brian kusler sent forth the following nugget of cyber-thought:

hopefully i'll be here then. i'm going down to SF on the 11th until at least the 14th or the 15th... basically i'm staying in SF until i have keys to an apartment, and from what i hear about the rental market down there, i might be in for a long stay!

NetObjects (in Redwood City) made me an offer i couldn't refuse and i'm taking it. my first day is october 5th.

the "honeymoon" :)

chris erdman lovingly referred to our oregon coast trip in 1997 as our "honeymoon". well, one way or the other it was awesome. and god bless kelly's mom and stepdad for saving us from the "lavish salad bar" (iceberg and thousand island) at the lovely Sea Hag and recommending we drive a bit to the Salishan Lodge. seriously one of the best meals of my life :)

mother adobe

adobe was a huge. it's where we met. it was first "real" jobs out of college for both of us. to this day, we still measure every work environment we encounter against it... besides letting me "fish off the company pier" for a husband, mother (as we liked to call her):
  • sent me to school to become a "real engineer" (as opposed to a sanitary engineer)
  • taught me how to be a technical writer ("2 atila records, hold the prose, please...")
  • gave me my first introduction to corporate office politics (pretty girls get better computers)
  • beer at work meetings? (i'm seeing matthew turning around and saying "welcome to software!")
  • tried to teach me and kelly how to waltz (there were a lot of sore toes at the "ballroom dancing for nerds" class)
  • taught me to sing hanson's mmmBop in german
  • "you're going to hell for that jim looker!" (god bless you pat wiedmeier!!)
  • showed me that there are buttheads even at the coolest places: the flap over kelly's anti-aids t-shirts and posters, scott interrogating and screaming at me over my new york trip, deb threatening to fire randy because "your personal homepage is 3-clicks away from a porn site!", "due to the severe snow storm everyone gets to stay home for personal safety reasons -- unless you have a phone shift, you red-shirts still have to come in..."
  • but it also showed me that the good people outnumber the assholes about 200 to 1. jimmy, sau, kathleen, jenn, jen, randy, victor, nina, erdman, matthew, paul, barbie, hawkins, mikey, frank, kevin, linda, drew, jane, jaxon, barbara, brie, susan, cam, nona, meg, angie, rick, abbo, jason, nick, christian, doug, johnny, jeyen, kate, peggy, donna, steve, emily, denis, stan, roger, te, eric, mel, and of course, randy-fucking-pickle and madge bowes -- where would we be without you!?

[ bk: mikey had tons of great fotos of our jumping day -- we and the whole kusler bunch decided to go to the arboretum and jump off the abandoned freeway overpasses. so much fun! tho (sister)kelly and i both had an inclined landing which turned from red ass to a massive bruise the next day... mine went from the middle of my back all the way down my legs! ]

he's nice but he seems a little cocky...

when kel did the seattle-to-portland race in 1996, erik and i agreed to be his and jc's "pit crew". (i use the term very loosely). it rained that year and something about seeing kelly's face covered in mud... erik was like, "ok... *now* i get why you have a crush on him"

we dragged him back to my parents house in Vantucky for some lasagne, a hot tub soak, and a nap before hauling his carcass back to seattle. while he was sacked out on the couch my mom uttered her now-famous quote, "he seems a little cocky... but very nice"
